Schoolhouse Dachshunds got its start in the early 1970s, as Judy Anderson met Peggy Westphal of Westphal Wirehaired Dachshunds and Von Westphalen Smooth Dachshunds. She and her children would frequently visit Peggy's kennel to play with the dogs. Through Westphal, Judy met another famous Dachshund breeder, Dorothy "Dee" Hutchinson, who bred under the Rose Farms Prefix. From these two early mentors, Judy developed an interest in showing and breeding. As Judy wrote in a Purina's "Today's Breeder" article, "'I fell in love with the breed through my work at Peggy's and Dee's kennels. Dee offered me my pick of one of her litters, and I chose a pretty smooth bitch who became my first champion, Rose Farms Impatiens.'"
From there, the Schoolhouse line (named after Judy's house at the time, which was the site of the original schoolhouse in Ridgefield, CT) was established. In 1978, Judy met Fred Vogel (along with his eventual wife, Carol), who had also been mentored by Peggy and Dee. Their fast friendship formed a breeding partnership, which lasted through the years. "Brodny Schoolhouse" is still a well known joint prefix, as the Vogels and Judy produced numerous champions over the years, including multiple Best in Show winners, notable awards at the Dachshund Club of America national (including Best of Variety Wire), and consistent top dogs in the rankings.
In 2008, Emi Pedraza reached out to Judy as she was searching for a puppy to be her next Junior Showmanship dog. At the time, Emi was 14 and had been practically born into the breed, through her mother (Kristin Cihos-Williams) breeding standard smooth dachshunds under the Kinderteckel prefix. Judy offered her eventual GCH Brodny Schoolhouse Street Smart, aka "Vito." In addition to being a part-time juniors dog, he was ranked in the top 10 nationally for all wirehaired dachshunds for two years in a row and was Best of Opposite Sex at Westminster in 2012. More importantly, however, Emi earned a friend and mentor through Vito with Judy.
Emi and Judy co-bred a litter together as Judy's breeding days became more limited and while Emi was in college at the University of California, San Diego. From that litter, all 3 that were shown became champions from the Bred-By Exhibitor class, with many specialty wins along the way. In 2016, Shirley Ray shared a beautiful bitch, GCH Raydachs Schoolhouse Blaze of Glory, to contibute to the future Schoolhouse breeding program. Sadly, Judy Anderson passed away in January of 2020. With Judy's wishes, Emi is continuing on the Schoolhouse line for future generations of healthy, happy and correct standard wires.
Additionally, Emi is an active board member and the current Corresponding Secretary for The Dachshund Club of California. She is also a member in good standing with The Dachshund Club of America.
